2016-07-28doc-rst: Remove the media docbookMauro Carvalho Chehab
Now that all media documentation was converted to Sphinx, we should get rid of the old DocBook one, as we don't want people to submit patches against the old stuff. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@s-opensource.com> Acked-by: Hans Verkuil <hans.verkuil@cisco.com> Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@s-opensource.com>
2016-07-08[media] DocBook: mention the memory type to be set for all streaming I/OJavier Martinez Canillas
The DMA buffer importing streaming I/O section mentions the memory type value that has to be set when calling the VIDIOC_REQBUFS ioctl but this isn't mentioned in neither the Memory Mapping nor User Pointer sections. A user can know the values by looking at the examples but it's better to explicitly mention in the documentation, and also makes all sections about streaming I/O methods more consistent. 2016-04-25[media] DocBook media: drop 'experimental' annotationsHans Verkuil
Drop the 'experimental' annotations. The only remaining part of the API that is still marked 'experimental' are the debug ioctls/structs, and that is intentional. Only the v4l2-dbg application should use those. All others have been around for years, so it is time to drop the 'experimental' designation. 2015-11-17[media] DocBook media: s/input stream/capture stream/Hans Verkuil
The term "input stream" is confusing since it is not clear whether this is an input stream from the point of view of the application or from the point of view of the hardware. So replace it with the more standard term "capture stream". Signed-off-by: Hans Verkuil <hans.verkuil@cisco.com> Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@osg.samsung.com>

2015-06-06[media] DocBook media: correct description of reserved fieldsHans Verkuil
Make sure that the documentation clearly states who is zeroing reserved fields: drivers and/or applications. This patch syncs the documentation with the checks that v4l2-compliance and valgrind do. Document the interaction between VIDIOC_DECODER_CMD V4L2_DEC_CMD_STOP and VIDIOC_ENCODER_CMD V4L2_ENC_CMD_STOP to start the draining, the V4L2_EVENT_EOS event signalling all capture buffers are finished and ready to be dequeud, the new V4L2_BUF_FLAG_LAST buffer flag indicating the last buffer being dequeued from the capture queue, and the poll and VIDIOC_DQBUF ioctl return values once the queue is drained. 2014-11-03[media] DocBook media: Clarify V4L2_FIELD_ANY for driversSimon Farnsworth
Documentation for enum v4l2_field did not make it clear that V4L2_FIELD_ANY is only acceptable as input to the kernel, not as a response from the driver. 2014-04-16[media] DocBook media: update bytesused field descriptionHans Verkuil
For output buffers the application has to set the bytesused field. In reality applications often do not set this since drivers that deal with fix image sizes just override it anyway. The vb2 framework will replace this field with the length field if bytesused was set to 0 by the application, which is what happens in practice. Document this behavior. 2014-03-05[media] v4l: Document timestamp buffer flag behaviourSakari Ailus
Timestamp buffer flags are constant at the moment. Document them so that 1) they're always valid and 2) not changed by the drivers. This leaves room to extend the functionality later on if needed. 2014-03-05[media] v4l: Add timestamp source flags, mask and document themSakari Ailus
Some devices do not produce timestamps that correspond to the end of the frame. The user space should be informed on the matter. This patch achieves that by adding buffer flags (and a mask) for timestamp sources since more possible timestamping points are expected than just two. A three-bit mask is defined (V4L2_BUF_FLAG_TSTAMP_SRC_MASK) and two of the eight possible values is are defined V4L2_BUF_FLAG_TSTAMP_SRC_EOF for end of frame (value zero) V4L2_BUF_FLAG_TSTAMP_SRC_SOE for start of exposure (next value). 2014-03-05[media] v4l: Use full 32 bits for buffer flagsSakari Ailus
The buffer flags field is 32 bits but the defined only used 16. This is fine, but as more than 16 bits will be used in the very near future, define them as 32-bit numbers for consistency. 2014-03-05[media] v4l: Document timestamp behaviour to correspond to realitySakari Ailus
Document that monotonic timestamps are taken after the corresponding frame has been received, not when the reception has begun. This corresponds to the reality of current drivers: the timestamp is naturally taken when the hardware triggers an interrupt to tell the driver to handle the received frame. Remove the note on timestamp accuracy as it is fairly subjective what is actually an unstable timestamp. Also remove explanation that output buffer timestamps can be used to delay outputting a frame. Remove the footnote saying we always use realtime clock. 2012-05-14[media] v4l2: use __u32 rather than enums in ioctl() structsSakari Ailus
V4L2 uses the enum type in IOCTL arguments in IOCTLs that were defined until the use of enum was considered less than ideal. Recently Rémi Denis-Courmont brought up the issue by proposing a patch to convert the enums to unsigned: <URL:http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-media/msg46167.html> This sparked a long discussion where another solution to the issue was proposed: two sets of IOCTL structures, one with __u32 and the other with enums, and conversion code between the two: <URL:http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-media/msg47168.html> Both approaches implement a complete solution that resolves the problem. The first one is simple but requires assuming enums and __u32 are the same in size (so we won't break the ABI) while the second one is more complex and less clean but does not require making that assumption. The issue boils down to whether enums are fundamentally different from __u32 or not, and can the former be substituted by the latter. During the discussion it was concluded that the __u32 has the same size as enums on all archs Linux is supported: it has not been shown that replacing those enums in IOCTL arguments would break neither source or binary compatibility. If no such reason is found, just replacing the enums with __u32s is the way to go. This is what this patch does. This patch is slightly different from Remi's first RFC (link above): it uses __u32 instead of unsigned and also changes the arguments of VIDIOC_G_PRIORITY and VIDIOC_S_PRIORITY. 2011-07-27[media] DocBook: Move all media docbook stuff into its own directoryMauro Carvalho Chehab
This patch addresses several issues pointed by Randy Dunlap <rdunlap@xenotime.net> at changeset ece722c: - In the generated index.html file, "media" is listed first, but it should be listed in alphabetical order, not first. - The generated files are (hidden) in .tmpmedia/ - The link from the top-level index.html file to "media" is to media/index.html, but the file is actually in .tmpmedia/media/index.html - Please build docs with and without using "O=builddir" and test that. - Would it be possible for media to have its own Makefile instead of merging into this one? Due to the way cleandocs target works, I had to rename the media DocBook to media_api, otherwise cleandocs would remove the /media directory.
