2022-07-29profile: setup_profiling_timer() is moslty not implementedBen Dooks
The setup_profiling_timer() is mostly un-implemented by many architectures. In many places it isn't guarded by CONFIG_PROFILE which is needed for it to be used. Make it a weak symbol in kernel/profile.c and remove the 'return -EINVAL' implementations from the kenrel. There are a couple of architectures which do return 0 from the setup_profiling_timer() function but they don't seem to do anything else with it. To keep the /proc compatibility for now, leave these for a future update or removal. On ARM, this fixes the following sparse warning: arch/arm/kernel/smp.c:793:5: warning: symbol 'setup_profiling_timer' was not declared. Should it be static? 2022-07-27kbuild: drop support for CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_PERFORMANCE_O3Nick Desaulniers
The difference in most compilers between `-O3` and `-O2` is mostly down to whether loops with statically determinable trip counts are fully unrolled vs unrolled to a multiple of SIMD width. This patch is effectively a revert of commit 15f5db60a137 ("kbuild, arc: add CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_PERFORMANCE_O3 for ARC") without re-adding ARCH_CFLAGS Ever since commit cfdbc2e16e65 ("ARC: Build system: Makefiles, Kconfig, Linker script") ARC has been built with -O3, though the reason for doing so was not specified in inline comments or the commit message. This commit does not re-add -O3 to arch/arc/Makefile. Folks looking to experiment with `-O3` (or any compiler flag for that matter) may pass them along to the command line invocation of make: $ make KCFLAGS=-O3 Code that looks to re-add an explicit Kconfig option for `-O3` should provide: 1. A rigorous and reproducible performance profile of a reasonable userspace workload that demonstrates a hot loop in the kernel that would benefit from `-O3` over `-O2`. 2. Disassembly of said loop body before and after. 3. Provides stats on terms of increase in file size. 2022-07-22PCI: Move isa_dma_bridge_buggy out of asm/dma.hStafford Horne
The isa_dma_bridge_buggy symbol is only used for x86_32, and only x86_32 platforms or quirks ever set it. Add a new linux/isa-dma.h header that #defines isa_dma_bridge_buggy to 0 except on x86_32, where we keep it as a variable, and remove all the arch- specific definitions. Now all the platforms enable ARCH_HAS_GET_PAGE_PROT. They define and export own vm_get_page_prot() whether custom or standard DECLARE_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT. Hence there is no need for default generic fallback for vm_get_page_prot(). Just drop this fallback and also ARCH_HAS_GET_PAGE_PROT mechanism. 2022-07-17arc/mm: enable ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROTAnshuman Khandual
This enables ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT on the platform and exports standard vm_get_page_prot() implementation via DECLARE_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT, which looks up a private and static protection_map[] array. Subsequently all __SXXX and __PXXX macros can be dropped which are no longer needed. 2022-06-24jump_label: make initial NOP patching the special caseArd Biesheuvel
Instead of defaulting to patching NOP opcodes at init time, and leaving it to the architectures to override this if this is not needed, switch to a model where doing nothing is the default. This is the common case by far, as only MIPS requires NOP patching at init time. On all other architectures, the correct encodings are emitted by the compiler and so no initial patching is needed. 2022-06-16mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory typesPeter Xu
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. Commit 40966e316f86 ("kthread: Ensure struct kthread is present for all kthreads") caused init and the user mode helper threads that call kernel_execve to have struct kthread allocated for them. This struct kthread going away during execve in turned made a use after free of struct kthread possible. Here, commit 343f4c49f243 ("kthread: Don't allocate kthread_struct for init and umh") is enough to fix the use after free and is simple enough to be backportable. The rest of the changes pass struct kernel_clone_args to clean things up and cause the code to make sense. In making init and the user mode helpers tasks purely user mode tasks I ran into two complications. The function task_tick_numa was detecting tasks without an mm by testing for the presence of PF_KTHREAD. The initramfs code in populate_initrd_image was using flush_delayed_fput to ensuere the closing of all it's file descriptors was complete, and flush_delayed_fput does not work in a userspace thread. Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". These functions are fork_idle(), create_io_thread(), kernel_thread(), and user_mode_thread(). Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-4-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. 2022-05-07fork: Pass struct kernel_clone_args into copy_threadEric W. Biederman
With io_uring we have started supporting tasks that are for most purposes user space tasks that exclusively run code in kernel mode. The kernel task that exec's init and tasks that exec user mode helpers are also user mode tasks that just run kernel code until they call kernel execve. Pass kernel_clone_args into copy_thread so these oddball tasks can be supported more cleanly and easily. v2: Fix spelling of kenrel_clone_args on h8300 Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-2-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. 2022-02-25uaccess: generalize access_ok()Arnd Bergmann
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. 2022-01-08kbuild: do not quote string values in include/config/auto.confMasahiro Yamada
The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include include/config/auto.conf. Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles, we can change it into a more Make-friendly form. Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes (both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf): CONFIG_X="foo bar" Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well) verbatim. We must rip them off when used. There are some patterns: [1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X)) [2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%) [3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X)) [4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X)) These are not only ugly, but also fragile. [1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like CONFIG_X=" foo bar " [3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like CONFIG_X="foo\"bar" [4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process. Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles. This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf. 2021-11-17Add linux/cacheflush.hMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)
Many architectures do not include asm-generic/cacheflush.h, so turn the includes on their head and add linux/cacheflush.h which includes asm/cacheflush.h. Move the flush_dcache_folio() declaration from asm-generic/cacheflush.h to linux/cacheflush.h and change linux/highmem.h to include linux/cacheflush.h instead of asm/cacheflush.h so that all necessary places will see flush_dcache_folio(). More functions should have their default implementations moved in the future, but those are for follow-on patches. This fixes csky, sparc and sparc64 which were missed in the commit which added flush_dcache_folio().
