2018-04-26ACPI / EC: Restore polling during noirq suspend/resume phasesRafael J. Wysocki
[ Upstream commit 3cd091a773936c54344a519f7ee1379ccb620bee ] Commit 662591461c4b (ACPI / EC: Drop EC noirq hooks to fix a regression) modified the ACPI EC driver so that it doesn't switch over to busy polling mode during noirq stages of system suspend and resume in an attempt to fix an issue resulting from that behavior. However, that modification introduced a system resume regression on Thinkpad X240, so make the EC driver switch over to the polling mode during noirq stages of system suspend and resume again, which effectively reverts the problematic commit. [ Upstream commit 63347db0affadcbccd5613116ea8431c70139b3e ] The acpi_get_bus_status wrapper for acpi_bus_get_status_handle has some code to handle certain device quirks, in some cases we also need this quirk handling for the initial _STA call. Specifically on some devices calling _STA before all _DEP dependencies are met results in errors like these: [ 0.123579] ACPI Error: No handler for Region [ECRM] (00000000ba9edc4c) [GenericSerialBus] (20170831/evregion-166) [ 0.123601] ACPI Error: Region GenericSerialBus (ID=9) has no handler (20170831/exfldio-299) [ 0.123618] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed \_SB.I2C1.BAT1._STA, AE_NOT_EXIST (20170831/psparse-550) acpi_get_bus_status already has code to avoid this, so by using it we also silence these errors from the initial _STA call. Note that in order for the acpi_get_bus_status handling for this to work, we initialize dep_unmet to 1 until acpi_device_dep_initialize gets called, this means that battery devices will be instantiated with an initial status of 0. This is not a problem, acpi_bus_attach will get called soon after the instantiation anyways and it will update the status as first point of order. 2018-04-26ACPI / bus: Do not call _STA on battery devices with unmet dependenciesHans de Goede
[ Upstream commit 54ddce7062242036402242242c07c60c0b505f84 ] The battery code uses acpi_device->dep_unmet to check for unmet deps and if there are unmet deps it does not bind to the device to avoid errors about missing OpRegions when calling ACPI methods on the device. Then if there comes a _PPC change notification which touches HWP register during this stage, the warning is triggered. Since we don't call acpi_processor_register_performance() when HWP is enabled, the pr->performance will be NULL. When this is NULL we don't need to do _PPC change notification. 2018-04-26ACPI / LPSS: Do not instiate platform_dev for devs without MMIO resourcesHans de Goede
[ Upstream commit e1681599345b8466786b6e54a2db2a00a068a3f3 ] acpi_lpss_create_device() skips handling LPSS devices which do not have a mmio resources in their resource list (typically these devices are disabled by the firmware). But since the LPSS code does not bind to the device, acpi_bus_attach() ends up still creating a platform device for it and the regular platform_driver for the ACPI HID still tries to bind to it. This happens e.g. on some boards which do not use the pwm-controller and have an empty or invalid resource-table for it. Currently this causes these error messages to get logged: [ 3.281966] pwm-lpss 80862288:00: invalid resource [ 3.287098] pwm-lpss: probe of 80862288:00 failed with error -22 This commit stops the undesirable creation of a platform_device for disabled LPSS devices by setting pnp.type.platform_id to 0. Note that acpi_scan_attach_handler() also sets pnp.type.platform_id to 0 when there is a matching handler for the device and that handler has no attach callback, so we simply behave as a handler without an attach function in this case. 2018-04-24nfit: skip region registration for incomplete control regionsDan Williams

Per the ACPI specification the only functional purpose for a DIMM Control Region to be mapped into the system physical address space, from an OSPM perspective, is to support block-apertures. However, there are some BIOSen that publish DIMM Control Region SPA entries for pre-boot environment consumption. 2018-04-12ACPI / video: Default lcd_only to true on Win8-ready and newer machinesHans de Goede
[ Upstream commit 5928c281524fe451114e04f1dfa11246a37e859f ] We're seeing a lot of bogus backlight interfaces on newer machines without a LCD such as desktops, servers and HDMI sticks. This causes userspace to show a non-functional brightness slider in e.g. the GNOME3 system menu, which is undesirable. And, in general, we should simply just not register a non functional backlight interface. Checking the LCD flag causes the bogus acpi_video backlight interfaces to go away (on the machines this was tested on). This change sets the lcd_only option by default on any machines which are Win8-ready, to fix this. This is not entirely without a risk of regressions, but video_detect.c already prefers native-backlight interfaces over the acpi_video one on Win8-ready machines, calling acpi_video_unregister_backlight() as soon as a native interface shows up. This is done because the ACPI backlight interface often is broken on Win8-ready machines, because win8 does not seem to actually use it. So in practice we already end up not registering the ACPI backlight interface on (most) Win8-ready machines with a LCD panel, thus this change does not change anything for (most) machines with a LCD panel and on machines without a LCD panel we actually don't want to register any backlight interfaces. 2018-03-08ACPI / bus: Parse tables as term_list for Dell XPS 9570 and Precision M5530Kai Heng Feng
commit 36904703aeeeb6cd31993f1353c8325006229f9a upstream. The i2c touchpad on Dell XPS 9570 and Precision M5530 doesn't work out of box. The touchpad relies on its _INI method to update its _HID value from XXXX0000 to SYNA2393. Also, the _STA relies on value of I2CN to report correct status. Set acpi_gbl_parse_table_as_term_list so the value of I2CN can be correctly set up, and _INI can get run. The ACPI table in this machine is designed to get parsed this way. 2018-02-03ACPI / bus: Leave modalias empty for devices which are not presentHans de Goede
[ Upstream commit 10809bb976648ac58194a629e3d7af99e7400297 ] Most Bay and Cherry Trail devices use a generic DSDT with all possible peripheral devices present in the DSDT, with their _STA returning 0x00 or 0x0f based on AML variables which describe what is actually present on the board. Since ACPI device objects with a 0x00 status (not present) still get an entry under /sys/bus/acpi/devices, and those entry had an acpi:PNPID modalias, userspace would end up loading modules for non present hardware. This commit fixes this by leaving the modalias empty for non present devices. This results in 10 modules less being loaded with a generic distro kernel config on my Cherry Trail test-device (a GPD pocket). The nfit driver neglects to link the ACPI DIMM device with the necessary driver data so acpi_nvdimm_notify() fails this lookup: nfit_mem = dev_get_drvdata(dev); if (nfit_mem && nfit_mem->flags_attr) sysfs_notify_dirent(nfit_mem->flags_attr); Add the necessary linkage when installing the notification handler and clean it up when the nfit driver instance is torn down. The commit f6f828513290 ("pstore: pass allocated memory region back to caller") changed the check of the return value from erst_read() in erst_reader() in the following way: if (len == -ENOENT) goto skip; - else if (len < 0) { - rc = -1; + else if (len < sizeof(*rcd)) { + rc = -EIO; goto out; This introduced another bug: since the comparison with sizeof() is cast to unsigned, a negative len value doesn't hit any longer. As a result, when an error is returned from erst_read(), the code falls through, and it may eventually lead to some weird thing like memory corruption. This patch adds the negative error value check more explicitly for addressing the issue. Replace ghes_io{re,un}map_pfn_{nmi,irq}()s use of ioremap_page_range() with __set_fixmap() as ioremap_page_range() may sleep to allocate a new level of page-table, even if its passed an existing final-address to use in the mapping. The GHES driver can only be enabled for architectures that select HAVE_ACPI_APEI: Add fixmap entries to both x86 and arm64. clear_fixmap() does the TLB invalidation in __set_fixmap() for arm64 and __set_pte_vaddr() for x86. In each case its the same as the respective arch_apei_flush_tlb_one(). If not, it will return errors in the ghes_probe() and not continue. If the probe is failed, the ghes_sea_remove() also has no chance to be called. Hence, remove the unnecessary handling when CONFIG_ACPI_APEI_SEA is not defined. For the NMI notification, it has the same issue as SEA notification, so also remove the unused dead-code for it. Due to the existence of the noirq stage, the ability of tuning the timing of acpi_ec_enable_event() invocation is still meaningful. This patch is a little bit different from the posted fix by moving acpi_config_boot_ec() from acpi_ec_ecdt_start() to acpi_ec_add() to make sure that EC event handling won't be stopped as long as the ACPI EC driver is bound. Thus the following sequence shouldn't disable EC event handling: unbind,suspend,resume,bind. commit ff1656790b3a4caca94505c52fd0250f981ea187 upstream. acpi_remove_pm_notifier() ends up calling flush_workqueue() while holding acpi_pm_notifier_lock, and that same lock is taken by by the work via acpi_pm_notify_handler(). This can deadlock. To fix the problem let's split the single lock into two: one to protect the dev->wakeup between the work vs. add/remove, and another one to handle notifier installation vs. removal. After commit a1d14934ea4b "workqueue/lockdep: 'Fix' flush_work() annotation" I was able to kill the machine (Intel Braswell) very easily with 'powertop --auto-tune', runtime suspending i915, and trying to wake it up via the USB keyboard. The cases when it didn't die are presumably explained by lockdep getting disabled by something else (cpu hotplug locking issues usually). This reverts commit 43858b4f25cf0adc5c2ca9cf5ce5fdf2532941e5. The reason I removed the leave_mm() calls in question is because the heuristic wasn't needed after that patch. With the original version of my PCID series, we never flushed a "lazy cpu" (i.e. a CPU running kernel thread) due a flush on the loaded mm. Unfortunately, that caused architectural issues, so now I've reinstated these flushes on non-PCID systems in: commit b956575bed91 ("x86/mm: Flush more aggressively in lazy TLB mode"). That, in turn, gives us a power management and occasionally performance regression as compared to old kernels: a process that goes into a deep idle state on a given CPU and gets its mm flushed due to activity on a different CPU will wake the idle CPU. Reinstate the old ugly heuristic: if a CPU goes into ACPI C3 or an intel_idle state that is likely to cause a TLB flush gets its mm switched to init_mm before going idle. FWIW, this heuristic is lousy. Whether we should change CR3 before idle isn't a good hint except insofar as the performance hit is a bit lower if the TLB is getting flushed by the idle code anyway. What we really want to know is whether we anticipate being idle long enough that the mm is likely to be flushed before we wake up. This is more a matter of the expected latency than the idle state that gets chosen. This heuristic also completely fails on systems that don't know whether the TLB will be flushed (e.g. AMD systems?). OTOH it may be a bit obsolete anyway -- PCID systems don't presently benefit from this heuristic at all. We also shouldn't do this callback from innermost bit of the idle code due to the RCU nastiness it causes. All the information need is available before rcu_idle_enter() needs to happen. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. commit f6810c15cf97 ("iommu/arm-smmu: Clean up early-probing workarounds") removed kernel code that was allowing to initialize and probe the SMMU devices early (ie earlier than PCI devices, through linker script callback entries) in the boot process because it was not needed any longer in that the SMMU devices/drivers now support deferred probing. Since the SMMUs probe routines are also in charge of requesting global PCI ACS kernel enablement, commit f6810c15cf97 ("iommu/arm-smmu: Clean up early-probing workarounds") also postponed PCI ACS enablement to SMMUs devices probe time, which is too late given that PCI devices needs to detect if PCI ACS is enabled to init the respective capability through the following call path: pci_device_add() -> pci_init_capabilities() -> pci_enable_acs() Add code in the ACPI IORT SMMU platform devices initialization path (that is called before ACPI PCI enumeration) to detect if there exists firmware mappings to map root complexes ids to SMMU ids and if so enable ACS for the system. Unfortunately the patch introduced the functionality, in particular when starting parsed from an ACPI device node, the hierarchical data extension nodes would not be enumerated. Restore the old behaviour while still retaining constness properties of the patch. Due to commit db3e50f3234b (device property: Get rid of struct fwnode_handle type field), ACPI_HANDLE() inadvertently became a GPL-only call. The call path that led to that was: ACPI_HANDLE() ACPI_COMPANION() to_acpi_device_node() is_acpi_device_node() acpi_device_fwnode_ops DECLARE_ACPI_FWNODE_OPS(acpi_device_fwnode_ops); ...and the new DECLARE_ACPI_FWNODE_OPS() includes EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL, whereas previously it was a static struct. In order to avoid changing any of that, let's instead provide ever so slightly better encapsulation of those struct fwnode_operations instances. Those do not really need to be directly used in inline function calls in header files. Simply moving two small functions (is_acpi_device_node and is_acpi_data_node) out of acpi_bus.h, and into a .c file, does that. That leaves the internals of struct fwnode_operations as GPL-only (which I think was the intent all along), but un-breaks any driver code out there that relies on the ACPI subsystem's being (historically) an EXPORT_SYMBOL-usable system. By that, I mean, ACPI_HANDLE() and other basic ACPI calls were non-GPL-protected. Also, while I'm there, remove a tiny bit of redundancy that was missed in the earlier commit, by having is_acpi_node() use the other two routines, instead of checking fwnode directly. 2017-09-04libnvdimm, nfit: move the check on nd_reserved2 to the endpointMeng Xu
Delay the check of nd_reserved2 to the actual endpoint (acpi_nfit_ctl) that uses it, as a prevention of a potential double-fetch bug. While examining the kernel source code, I found a dangerous operation that could turn into a double-fetch situation (a race condition bug) where the same userspace memory region are fetched twice into kernel with sanity checks after the first fetch while missing checks after the second fetch. In the case of _IOC_NR(ioctl_cmd) == ND_CMD_CALL: 1. The first fetch happens in line 935 copy_from_user(&pkg, p, sizeof(pkg) 2. subsequently `pkg.nd_reserved2` is asserted to be all zeroes (line 984 to 986). 3. The second fetch happens in line 1022 copy_from_user(buf, p, buf_len) 4. Given that `p` can be fully controlled in userspace, an attacker can race condition to override the header part of `p`, say, `((struct nd_cmd_pkg *)p)->nd_reserved2` to arbitrary value (say nine 0xFFFFFFFF for `nd_reserved2`) after the first fetch but before the second fetch. The changed value will be copied to `buf`. 5. There is no checks on the second fetches until the use of it in line 1034: nd_cmd_clear_to_send(nvdimm_bus, nvdimm, cmd, buf) and line 1038: nd_desc->ndctl(nd_desc, nvdimm, cmd, buf, buf_len, &cmd_rc) which means that the assumed relation, `p->nd_reserved2` are all zeroes might not hold after the second fetch. And once the control goes to these functions we lose the context to assert the assumed relation. 6. Based on my manual analysis, `p->nd_reserved2` is not used in function `nd_cmd_clear_to_send` and potential implementations of `nd_desc->ndctl` so there is no working exploit against it right now. However, this could easily turns to an exploitable one if careless developers start to use `p->nd_reserved2` later and assume that they are all zeroes. Move the validation of the nd_reserved2 field to the ->ndctl() implementation where it has a stable buffer to evaluate.
