2021-10-13video: fbdev: gbefb: Only instantiate device when built for IP32Mark Brown
[ Upstream commit 11b8e2bb986d23157e82e267fb8cc6b281dfdee9 ] The gbefb driver not only registers a driver but also the device for that driver. This is all well and good when run on the IP32 machines that are supported by the driver but since the driver supports building with COMPILE_TEST we might also be building on other platforms which do not have this hardware and will crash instantiating the driver. Add an IS_ENABLED() check so we compile out the device registration if we don't have the Kconfig option for the machine enabled. 2021-09-15backlight: pwm_bl: Improve bootloader/kernel device handoverDaniel Thompson
commit 79fad92f2e596f5a8dd085788a24f540263ef887 upstream. Currently there are (at least) two problems in the way pwm_bl starts managing the enable_gpio pin. Both occur when the backlight is initially off and the driver finds the pin not already in output mode and, as a result, unconditionally switches it to output-mode and asserts the signal. Problem 1: This could cause the backlight to flicker since, at this stage in driver initialisation, we have no idea what the PWM and regulator are doing (an unconfigured PWM could easily "rest" at 100% duty cycle). Problem 2: This will cause us not to correctly honour the post_pwm_on_delay (which also risks flickers). Fix this by moving the code to configure the GPIO output mode until after we have examines the handover state. That allows us to initialize enable_gpio to off if the backlight is currently off and on if the backlight is on. 2021-05-26video: hgafb: correctly handle card detect failure during probeAnirudh Rayabharam
commit 02625c965239b71869326dd0461615f27307ecb3 upstream. The return value of hga_card_detect() is not properly handled causing the probe to succeed even though hga_card_detect() failed. Since probe succeeds, hgafb_open() can be called which will end up operating on an unmapped hga_vram. This results in an out-of-bounds access as reported by kernel test robot [1]. To fix this, correctly detect failure of hga_card_detect() by checking for a non-zero error code. 2021-05-26vt: Fix character height handling with VT_RESIZEXMaciej W. Rozycki
commit 860dafa902595fb5f1d23bbcce1215188c3341e6 upstream. Restore the original intent of the VT_RESIZEX ioctl's `v_clin' parameter which is the number of pixel rows per character (cell) rather than the height of the font used. For framebuffer devices the two values are always the same, because the former is inferred from the latter one. For VGA used as a true text mode device these two parameters are independent from each other: the number of pixel rows per character is set in the CRT controller, while font height is in fact hardwired to 32 pixel rows and fonts of heights below that value are handled by padding their data with blanks when loaded to hardware for use by the character generator. One can change the setting in the CRT controller and it will update the screen contents accordingly regardless of the font loaded. The `v_clin' parameter is used by the `vgacon' driver to set the height of the character cell and then the cursor position within. Make the parameter explicit then, by defining a new `vc_cell_height' struct member of `vc_data', set it instead of `vc_font.height' from `v_clin' in the VT_RESIZEX ioctl, and then use it throughout the `vgacon' driver except where actual font data is accessed which as noted above is independent from the CRTC setting. This way the framebuffer console driver is free to ignore the `v_clin' parameter as irrelevant, as it always should have, avoiding any issues attempts to give the parameter a meaning there could have caused, such as one that has led to commit 988d0763361b ("vt_ioctl: make VT_RESIZEX behave like VT_RESIZE"): "syzbot is reporting UAF/OOB read at bit_putcs()/soft_cursor() [1][2], for vt_resizex() from ioctl(VT_RESIZEX) allows setting font height larger than actual font height calculated by con_font_set() from ioctl(PIO_FONT). Since fbcon_set_font() from con_font_set() allocates minimal amount of memory based on actual font height calculated by con_font_set(), use of vt_resizex() can cause UAF/OOB read for font data." The problem first appeared around Linux 2.5.66 which predates our repo history, but the origin could be identified with the old MIPS/Linux repo also at: <git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ralf/linux.git> as commit 9736a3546de7 ("Merge with Linux 2.5.66."), where VT_RESIZEX code in `vt_ioctl' was updated as follows: if (clin) - video_font_height = clin; + vc->vc_font.height = clin; making the parameter apply to framebuffer devices as well, perhaps due to the use of "font" in the name of the original `video_font_height' variable. Use "cell" in the new struct member then to avoid ambiguity. 2021-05-26vgacon: Record video mode changes with VT_RESIZEXMaciej W. Rozycki

Fix an issue with VGA console font size changes made after the initial video text mode has been changed with a user tool like `svgatextmode' calling the VT_RESIZEX ioctl. As it stands in that case the original screen geometry continues being used to validate further VT resizing. Consequently when the video adapter is firstly reprogrammed from the original say 80x25 text mode using a 9x16 character cell (720x400 pixel resolution) to say 80x37 text mode and the same character cell (720x592 pixel resolution), and secondly the CRTC character cell updated to 9x8 (by loading a suitable font with the KD_FONT_OP_SET request of the KDFONTOP ioctl), the VT geometry does not get further updated from 80x37 and only upper half of the screen is used for the VT, with the lower half showing rubbish corresponding to whatever happens to be there in the video memory that maps to that part of the screen. Of course the proportions change according to text mode geometries and font sizes chosen. Address the problem then, by updating the text mode geometry defaults rather than checking against them whenever the VT is resized via a user ioctl. Signed-off-by: Maciej W. The original commit here, while technically correct, did not fully handle all of the reported issues that the commit stated it was fixing, so revert it until it can be "fixed" fully. Note, ioremap() probably will never fail for old hardware like this, and if anyone actually used this hardware (a PowerMac era PCI display card), they would not be using fbdev anymore. 2021-01-12video: hyperv_fb: Fix the mmap() regression for v5.4.y and olderDexuan Cui
db49200b1dad is backported from the mainline commit 5f1251a48c17 ("video: hyperv_fb: Fix the cache type when mapping the VRAM"), to v5.4.y and older stable branches, but unluckily db49200b1dad causes mmap() to fail for /dev/fb0 due to EINVAL: [ 5797.049560] x86/PAT: a.out:1910 map pfn expected mapping type uncached-minus for [mem 0xf8200000-0xf85cbfff], got write-back This means the v5.4.y kernel detects an incompatibility issue about the mapping type of the VRAM: db49200b1dad changes to use Write-Back when mapping the VRAM, while the mmap() syscall tries to use Uncached-minus. That’s to say, the kernel thinks Uncached-minus is incompatible with Write-Back: see drivers/video/fbdev/core/fbmem.c: fb_mmap() -> vm_iomap_memory() -> io_remap_pfn_range() -> ... -> track_pfn_remap() -> reserve_pfn_range(). Note: any v5.5 and newer kernel doesn't have the issue, because they have commit d21987d709e8 ("video: hyperv: hyperv_fb: Support deferred IO for Hyper-V frame buffer driver") , and when the hyperv_fb driver has the deferred_io support, fb_deferred_io_init() overrides info->fbops->fb_mmap with fb_deferred_io_mmap(), which doesn’t check the mapping type incompatibility. Note: since it's VRAM here, the checking is not really necessary. Fix the regression by ioremap_wc(), which uses Write-combining. The kernel thinks it's compatible with Uncached-minus. The VRAM mappped by ioremap_wc() is slightly slower than mapped by ioremap_cache(), but is still significantly faster than by ioremap(). Change the comment accordingly. Linux VM on ARM64 Hyper-V is still not working in the latest mainline yet, and when it works in future, the ARM64 support is unlikely to be backported to v5.4 and older, so using ioremap_wc() in v5.4 and older should be ok. Note: this fix is only targeted at the stable branches: v5.4.y, v4.19.y, v4.14.y, v4.9.y and v4.4.y. 2020-12-02video: hyperv_fb: Fix the cache type when mapping the VRAMDexuan Cui
[ Upstream commit 5f1251a48c17b54939d7477305e39679a565382c ] x86 Hyper-V used to essentially always overwrite the effective cache type of guest memory accesses to WB. This was problematic in cases where there is a physical device assigned to the VM, since that often requires that the VM should have control over cache types. Thus, on newer Hyper-V since 2018, Hyper-V always honors the VM's cache type, but unexpectedly Linux VM users start to complain that Linux VM's VRAM becomes very slow, and it turns out that Linux VM should not map the VRAM uncacheable by ioremap(). Fix this slowness issue by using ioremap_cache(). On ARM64, ioremap_cache() is also required as the host also maps the VRAM cacheable, otherwise VM Connect can't display properly with ioremap() or ioremap_wc(). With this change, the VRAM on new Hyper-V is as fast as regular RAM, so it's no longer necessary to use the hacks we added to mitigate the slowness, i.e. we no longer need to allocate physical memory and use it to back up the VRAM in Generation-1 VM, and we also no longer need to allocate physical memory to back up the framebuffer in a Generation-2 VM and copy the framebuffer to the real VRAM. A further big change will address these for v5.11. [ Upstream commit ec0972adecb391a8d8650832263a4790f3bfb4df ] syzbot is reporting OOB read at fbcon_resize() [1], for commit 39b3cffb8cf31117 ("fbcon: prevent user font height or width change from causing potential out-of-bounds access") is by error using registered_fb[con2fb_map[vc->vc_num]]->fbcon_par->p->userfont (which was set to non-zero) instead of fb_display[vc->vc_num].userfont (which remains zero for that display). We could remove tricky userfont flag [2], for we can determine it by comparing address of the font data and addresses of built-in font data. But since that commit is failing to fix the original OOB read [3], this patch keeps the change minimal in case we decide to revert altogether. 2020-09-17vgacon: remove software scrollback supportLinus Torvalds

Yunhai Zhang recently fixed a VGA software scrollback bug in commit ebfdfeeae8c0 ("vgacon: Fix for missing check in scrollback handling"), but that then made people look more closely at some of this code, and there were more problems on the vgacon side, but also the fbcon software scrollback. We don't really have anybody who maintains this code - probably because nobody actually _uses_ it any more. Sure, people still use both VGA and the framebuffer consoles, but they are no longer the main user interfaces to the kernel, and haven't been for decades, so these kinds of extra features end up bitrotting and not really being used. So rather than try to maintain a likely unused set of code, I'll just aggressively remove it, and see if anybody even notices. Maybe there are people who haven't jumped on the whole GUI badnwagon yet, and think it's just a fad. And maybe those people use the scrollback code. If that turns out to be the case, we can resurrect this again, once we've found the sucker^Wmaintainer for it who actually uses it. The soft scrollback code was really useful a few decades ago when you typically used the console interactively as the main way to interact with the machine, but that just isn't the case any more. 2020-09-03fbmem: pull fbcon_update_vcs() out of fb_set_var()Tetsuo Handa
[ Upstream commit d88ca7e1a27eb2df056bbf37ddef62e1c73d37ea ] syzbot is reporting OOB read bug in vc_do_resize() [1] caused by memcpy() based on outdated old_{rows,row_size} values, for resize_screen() can recurse into vc_do_resize() which changes vc->vc_{cols,rows} that outdates old_{rows,row_size} values which were saved before calling resize_screen(). Daniel Vetter explained that resize_screen() should not recurse into fbcon_update_vcs() path due to FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT being still set when calling resize_screen(). Instead of masking FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT before calling fbcon_update_vcs(), we can remove FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT by calling fbcon_update_vcs() only if fb_set_var() returned 0. This change assumes that it is harmless to call fbcon_update_vcs() when fb_set_var() returned 0 without reaching fb_notifier_call_chain(). [ Upstream commit edcb3895a751c762a18d25c8d9846ce9759ed7e1 ] neofb_probe() calls neo_scan_monitor() that can successfully allocate a memory for info->monspecs.modedb and proceed to case 0x03. There it does not free the memory and returns -1. neofb_probe() goes to label err_scan_monitor, thus, it does not free this memory through calling fb_destroy_modedb() as well. We can not go to label err_init_hw since neo_scan_monitor() can fail during memory allocation. So, the patch frees the memory directly for case 0x03. [ Upstream commit e8d35898a78e34fc854ed9680bc3f9caedab08cd ] savagefb_probe() calls savage_init_fb_info() that can successfully allocate memory for info->pixmap.addr but then fail when fb_alloc_cmap() fails. savagefb_probe() goes to label failed_init and does not free allocated memory. It is not valid to go to label failed_mmio since savage_init_fb_info() can fail during memory allocation as well. So, the patch free allocated memory on the error handling path in savage_init_fb_info() itself. Found by Linux Driver Verification project (linuxtesting.org). 2020-08-11omapfb: dss: Fix max fclk divider for omap36xxAdam Ford

Through experimentation, it appears that 31 works, and it is consistent with the value used by the drm/omap driver. This patch fixes the divider for fbdev driver instead of the drm. 2020-07-29fbdev: Detect integer underflow at "struct fbcon_ops"->clear_margins.Tetsuo Handa
commit 033724d6864245a11f8e04c066002e6ad22b3fd0 upstream. syzbot is reporting general protection fault in bitfill_aligned() [1] caused by integer underflow in bit_clear_margins(). The cause of this problem is when and how do_vc_resize() updates vc->vc_{cols,rows}. If vc_do_resize() fails (e.g. kzalloc() fails) when var.xres or var.yres is going to shrink, vc->vc_{cols,rows} will not be updated. This allows bit_clear_margins() to see info->var.xres < (vc->vc_cols * cw) or info->var.yres < (vc->vc_rows * ch). Unexpectedly large rw or bh will try to overrun the __iomem region and causes general protection fault. Also, vc_resize(vc, 0, 0) does not set vc->vc_{cols,rows} = 0 due to new_cols = (cols ? cols : vc->vc_cols); new_rows = (lines ? lines : vc->vc_rows); exception. Since cols and lines are calculated as cols = FBCON_SWAP(ops->rotate, info->var.xres, info->var.yres); rows = FBCON_SWAP(ops->rotate, info->var.yres, info->var.xres); cols /= vc->vc_font.width; rows /= vc->vc_font.height; vc_resize(vc, cols, rows); in fbcon_modechanged(), var.xres < vc->vc_font.width makes cols = 0 and var.yres < vc->vc_font.height makes rows = 0. This means that const int fd = open("/dev/fb0", O_ACCMODE); struct fb_var_screeninfo var = { }; ioctl(fd, FBIOGET_VSCREENINFO, &var); var.xres = var.yres = 1; ioctl(fd, FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO, &var); easily reproduces integer underflow bug explained above. Of course, callers of vc_resize() are not handling vc_do_resize() failure is bad. But we can't avoid vc_resize(vc, 0, 0) which returns 0. Therefore, as a band-aid workaround, this patch checks integer underflow in "struct fbcon_ops"->clear_margins call, assuming that vc->vc_cols * vc->vc_font.width and vc->vc_rows * vc->vc_font.heigh do not cause integer overflow.
