2010-12-09drivers/video/efifb.c: support framebuffer for NVIDIA 9400M in MacBook Pro 5,1Thomas Gerlach
commit 8a3bdfe6cd841880a5d849c40f90093b3817f6e0 upstream. Description of patch: --------------------- This is a patch for the EFI framebuffer driver to enable the framebuffer of the NVIDIA 9400M as found in MacBook Pro (MBP) 5,1 and up. The framebuffer of the NVIDIA graphic cards are located at the following addresses in memory: 9400M: 0xC0010000 9600M GT: 0xB0030000 The patch delivered right here only provides the memory location of the framebuffer of the 9400M device. The 9600M GT is not covered. It is assumed that the 9400M is used when powered up the MBP. The information which device is currently powered and in use is stored in the 64 bytes large EFI variable "gpu-power-prefs". More specifically, byte 0x3B indicates whether 9600M GT (0x00) or 9400M (0x01) is online. The PCI bus IDs are the following: 9400M: PCI 03:00:00 9600M GT: PCI 02:00:00 The EFI variables can be easily read-out and manipulated with "rEFIt", an MBP specific bootloader tool. For more information on how handle rEFIt and EFI variables please consult "http://refit.sourceforge.net" and "http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1076879.html". IMPORTANT NOTE: The information on how to activate the 9400M device given at "ubuntuforums.org" is not correct, since it states gpu-power-prefs[0x3B] = 0x00 -> 9400M (PCI 02:00:00) gpu-power-prefs[0x3B] = 0x01 -> 9600M GT (PCI 03:00:00) Actually, the assignment of the values and the PCI bus IDs are swapped. Suggestions: ------------ To cover framebuffers of both 9400M and 9600M GT, I would suggest to implement a conditional on "gpu-power-prefs". Depending on the value of byte 0x3B, the according framebuffer is selected. However, this requires kernel access to the EFI variables. 2010-12-09backlight: grab ops_lock before testing bd->opsUwe Kleine-König
commit d1d73578e053b981c3611e5a211534290d24a5eb upstream. According to the comment describing ops_lock in the definition of struct backlight_device and when comparing with other functions in backlight.c the mutex must be hold when checking ops to be non-NULL. 2010-12-09efifb: check that the base address is plausible on pci systemsPeter Jones
commit 85a00d9bbfb4704fbf368944b1cb9fed8f1598c5 upstream. Some Apple machines have identical DMI data but different memory configurations for the video. Given that, check that the address in our table is actually within the range of a PCI BAR on a VGA device in the machine. This also fixes up the return value from set_system(), which has always been wrong, but never resulted in bad behavior since there's only ever been one matching entry in the dmi table. The patch 1) stops people's machines from crashing when we get their display wrong, which seems to be unfortunately inevitable, 2) allows us to support identical dmi data with differing video memory configurations This also adds me as the efifb maintainer, since I've effectively been acting as such for quite some time. 2010-12-09viafb: use proper register for colour when doing fill opsFlorian Tobias Schandinat
commit efd4f6398dc92b5bf392670df862f42a19f34cf2 upstream. The colour was written to a wrong register for fillrect operations. This sometimes caused empty console space (for example after 'clear') to have a different colour than desired. Fix this by writing to the correct register. 2010-01-22revert "drivers/video/s3c-fb.c: fix clock setting for Samsung SoC Framebuffer"Mark Brown
commit eb29a5cc0b601c458bae9df2f6c3696d75c2d383 upstream. Fix divide by zero and broken output. Commit 600ce1a0fa ("fix clock setting for Samsung SoC Framebuffer") introduced a mandatory refresh parameter to the platform data for the S3C framebuffer but did not introduce any validation code, causing existing platforms (none of which have refresh set) to divide by zero whenever the framebuffer is configured, generating warnings and unusable output. Ben Dooks noted several problems with the patch: - The platform data supplies the pixclk directly and should already have taken care of the refresh rate. - The addition of a window ID parameter doesn't help since only the root framebuffer can control the pixclk. - pixclk is specified in picoseconds (rather than Hz) as the patch assumed. and suggests reverting the commit so do that. Without fixing this no mainline user of the driver will produce output. request_region should be used with release_region, not request_mem_region. 2009-11-12fb: remove fb_save_state() and fb_restore_state operationsKrzysztof Helt
Remove fb_save_state() and fb_restore_state operations from frame buffer layer. They are used only in two drivers: 1. savagefb - and cause bug #11248 2. uvesafb Usage of these operations is misunderstood in both drivers so kill these operations, fix the bug #11248 and avoid confusion in the future. Tested on Savage 3D/MV card and the patch fixes the bug #11248. The frame buffer layer uses these funtions during switch between graphics and text mode of the console, but these drivers saves state before switching of the frame buffer (in the fb_open) and after releasing it (in the fb_release). This fixes a bug introduced by this commit ID: commit 537a1bf059fa312355696fa6db80726e655e7f17 Author: Krzysztof Helt <krzysztof.h1@wp.pl> Date: Tue Jun 30 11:41:29 2009 -0700 fbdev: add mutex for fb_mmap locking In which a mutex was added when changing smem_start and smem_len fields, so the mutex inside the fb_mmap() call is actually used. The problem was that set_fb_fix, which modifies the above 2 fields, was called before and after registering the framebuffer, which when used before registration, lead to a failed attempt to use an uninitialized mutex. 2009-09-23vgacon: prevent vgacon_deinit from touching the hardware for inactive consoles.Francisco Jerez
fbcon makes the (reasonable) assumption that it only needs to program the hardware once, when fbcon_init() is called for the foreground console. This doesn't always play well with vgacon because vgacon_deinit() is only doing its job when the last console it owns is closed (when switching from vgacon to fbcon, that's usually *after* fbcon_init() has set the new mode). Depending on the hardware this can cause the wrong framebuffer location to be scanned out (e.g. reproduced on nv05 with the nouveau framebuffer driver). 2009-09-23fbcon: only unbind from console if successfully registeredIan Armstrong
Attempting to unload a framebuffer module calls unregister_framebuffer() which in turn gets fbcon to release it. If fbcon has no framebuffers linked to a console, it will also unbind itself from the console driver. However, if fbcon never registered itself as a console driver, the unbind will fail causing the framebuffer device entry to persist. In most cases this failure will result in an oops when attempting to access the now non-existent device. This patch ensures that the fbcon unbind request will succeed even if a bind was never done. It tracks if a successful bind ever occurred & will only attempt to unbind if needed. If there never was a bind, it simply returns with no error.
