2022-09-24vfs: open inside ->tmpfile()Miklos Szeredi
This is in preparation for adding tmpfile support to fuse, which requires that the tmpfile creation and opening are done as a single operation. Replace the 'struct dentry *' argument of i_op->tmpfile with 'struct file *'. Call finish_open_simple() as the last thing in ->tmpfile() instances (may be omitted in the error case). Change d_tmpfile() argument to 'struct file *' as well to make callers more readable. 2022-09-11ramfs: convert ramfs_nommu_get_unmapped_area() to use ↵Vishal Moola (Oracle)
filemap_get_folios_contig() Convert to use folios throughout. This is in preparation for the removal for find_get_pages_contig(). Now also supports large folios. The initial version of this function set the page_address to be returned after finishing all the checks. Since folio_batches have a maximum of 15 folios, the function had to be modified to support getting and checking up to lpages, 15 pages at a time while still returning the initial page address. Now the function sets ret as soon as the first batch arrives, and updates it only if a check fails. The physical adjacency check utilizes the page frame numbers. The page frame number of each folio must be nr_pages away from the first folio. 2021-11-09ramfs: fix mount source show for ramfsyangerkun
ramfs_parse_param does not parse key "source", and will convert -ENOPARAM to 0. This will skip vfs_parse_fs_param_source in vfs_parse_fs_param, which lead always "none" mount source for ramfs. 2021-01-24fs: make helpers idmap mount awareChristian Brauner
Extend some inode methods with an additional user namespace argument. A filesystem that is aware of idmapped mounts will receive the user namespace the mount has been marked with. This can be used for additional permission checking and also to enable filesystems to translate between uids and gids if they need to. We have implemented all relevant helpers in earlier patches. As requested we simply extend the exisiting inode method instead of introducing new ones. This is a little more code churn but it's mostly mechanical and doesnt't leave us with additional inode methods. 2021-01-24attr: handle idmapped mountsChristian Brauner
When file attributes are changed most filesystems rely on the setattr_prepare(), setattr_copy(), and notify_change() helpers for initialization and permission checking. Let them handle idmapped mounts. If the inode is accessed through an idmapped mount map it into the mount's user namespace. Afterwards the checks are identical to non-idmapped mounts. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. Helpers that perform checks on the ia_uid and ia_gid fields in struct iattr assume that ia_uid and ia_gid are intended values and have already been mapped correctly at the userspace-kernelspace boundary as we already do today. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. 2021-01-24inode: make init and permission helpers idmapped mount awareChristian Brauner
The inode_owner_or_capable() helper determines whether the caller is the owner of the inode or is capable with respect to that inode. Allow it to handle idmapped mounts. If the inode is accessed through an idmapped mount it according to the mount's user namespace. Afterwards the checks are identical to non-idmapped mounts. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. Similarly, allow the inode_init_owner() helper to handle idmapped mounts. It initializes a new inode on idmapped mounts by mapping the fsuid and fsgid of the caller from the mount's user namespace. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. 2020-10-16ramfs: fix nommu mmap with gaps in the page cacheMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)
ramfs needs to check that pages are both physically contiguous and contiguous in the file. If the page cache happens to have, eg, page A for index 0 of the file, no page for index 1, and page A+1 for index 2, then an mmap of the first two pages of the file will succeed when it should fail. 2019-09-12vfs: Convert ramfs, shmem, tmpfs, devtmpfs, rootfs to use the new mount APIDavid Howells
Convert the ramfs, shmem, tmpfs, devtmpfs and rootfs filesystems to the new internal mount API as the old one will be obsoleted and removed. This allows greater flexibility in communication of mount parameters between userspace, the VFS and the filesystem. See Documentation/filesystems/mount_api.txt for more information. Note that tmpfs is slightly tricky as it can contain embedded commas, so it can't be trivially split up using strsep() to break on commas in generic_parse_monolithic(). Instead, tmpfs has to supply its own generic parser. However, if tmpfs changes, then devtmpfs and rootfs, which are wrappers around tmpfs or ramfs, must change too - and thus so must ramfs, so these had to be converted also. 2016-09-27fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME with current_time() for inode timestampsDeepa Dinamani
CURRENT_TIME macro is not appropriate for filesystems as it doesn't use the right granularity for filesystem timestamps. Use current_time() instead. CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe. This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also, current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be y2038 safe. Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they share the same time granularity. 2016-09-19ipc/shm: fix crash if CONFIG_SHMEM is not setKirill A. Shutemov
Commit c01d5b300774 ("shmem: get_unmapped_area align huge page") makes use of shm_get_unmapped_area() in shm_file_operations() unconditional to CONFIG_MMU. As Tony Battersby pointed this can lead NULL-pointer dereference on machine with CONFIG_MMU=y and CONFIG_SHMEM=n. In this case ipc/shm is backed by ramfs which doesn't provide f_op->get_unmapped_area for configurations with MMU. The solution is to provide dummy f_op->get_unmapped_area for ramfs when CONFIG_MMU=y, which just call current->mm->get_unmapped_area(). 2016-05-20tmpfs/ramfs: fix VM_MAYSHARE mappings for NOMMURich Felker
The nommu do_mmap expects f_op->get_unmapped_area to either succeed or return -ENOSYS for VM_MAYSHARE (e.g. private read-only) mappings. Returning addr in the non-MAP_SHARED case was completely wrong, and only happened to work because addr was 0. However, it prevented VM_MAYSHARE mappings from sharing backing with the fs cache, and forced such mappings (including shareable program text) to be copied whenever the number of mappings transitioned from 0 to 1, impacting performance and memory usage. Subsequent mappings beyond the first still correctly shared memory with the first. Instead, treat VM_MAYSHARE identically to VM_SHARED at the file ops level; do_mmap already handles the semantic differences between them. 2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. Dave Chinner has reported the following deadlock for xfs on loop device: : With the recent merge of the loop device changes, I'm now seeing : XFS deadlock on my single CPU, 1GB RAM VM running xfs/073. : : The deadlocked is as follows: : : kloopd1: loop_queue_read_work : xfs_file_iter_read : lock XFS inode XFS_IOLOCK_SHARED (on image file) : page cache read (GFP_KERNEL) : radix tree alloc : memory reclaim : reclaim XFS inodes : log force to unpin inodes : <wait for log IO completion> : : xfs-cil/loop1: <does log force IO work> : xlog_cil_push : xlog_write : <loop issuing log writes> : xlog_state_get_iclog_space() : <blocks due to all log buffers under write io> : <waits for IO completion> : : kloopd1: loop_queue_write_work : xfs_file_write_iter : lock XFS inode XFS_IOLOCK_EXCL (on image file) : <wait for inode to be unlocked> : : i.e. the kloopd, with it's split read and write work queues, has : introduced a dependency through memory reclaim. i.e. that writes : need to be able to progress for reads make progress. : : The problem, fundamentally, is that mpage_readpages() does a : GFP_KERNEL allocation, rather than paying attention to the inode's : mapping gfp mask, which is set to GFP_NOFS. : : The didn't used to happen, because the loop device used to issue : reads through the splice path and that does: : : error = add_to_page_cache_lru(page, mapping, index, : GFP_KERNEL & mapping_gfp_mask(mapping)); This has changed by commit aa4d86163e4 ("block: loop: switch to VFS ITER_BVEC"). This patch changes mpage_readpage{s} to follow gfp mask set for the mapping. There are, however, other places which are doing basically the same. lustre:ll_dir_filler is doing GFP_KERNEL from the function which apparently uses GFP_NOFS for other allocations so let's make this consistent. cifs:readpages_get_pages is called from cifs_readpages and __cifs_readpages_from_fscache called from the same path obeys mapping gfp. ramfs_nommu_expand_for_mapping is hardcoding GFP_KERNEL as well regardless it uses mapping_gfp_mask for the page allocation. ext4_mpage_readpages is the called from the page cache allocation path same as read_pages and read_cache_pages As I've noticed in my previous post I cannot say I would be happy about sprinkling mapping_gfp_mask all over the place and it sounds like we should drop gfp_mask argument altogether and use it internally in __add_to_page_cache_locked that would require all the filesystems to use mapping gfp consistently which I am not sure is the case here. From a quick glance it seems that some file system use it all the time while others are selective. 2015-01-20fs: introduce f_op->mmap_capabilities for nommu mmap supportChristoph Hellwig
Since "BDI: Provide backing device capability information [try #3]" the backing_dev_info structure also provides flags for the kind of mmap operation available in a nommu environment, which is entirely unrelated to it's original purpose. Introduce a new nommu-only file operation to provide this information to the nommu mmap code instead. Splitting this from the backing_dev_info structure allows to remove lots of backing_dev_info instance that aren't otherwise needed, and entirely gets rid of the concept of providing a backing_dev_info for a character device. It also removes the need for the mtd_inodefs filesystem. 2014-01-21fs/ramfs: don't use module_init for non-modular core codePaul Gortmaker
The ramfs is always built in. It will never be modular, so using module_init as an alias for __initcall is rather misleading. Fix this up now, so that we can relocate module_init from init.h into module.h in the future. If we don't do this, we'd have to add module.h to obviously non-modular code, and that would be a worse thing. Note that direct use of __initcall is discouraged, vs. one of the priority categorized subgroups. As __initcall gets mapped onto device_initcall, our use of fs_initcall (which makes sense for fs code) will thus change this registration from level 6-device to level 5-fs (i.e. slightly earlier). However no observable impact of that small difference has been observed during testing, or is expected. Also note that this change uncovers a missing semicolon bug in the registration of the initcall. 2013-09-11initmpfs: move rootfs code from fs/ramfs/ to init/Rob Landley

2013-09-11initmpfs: move bdi setup from init_rootfs to init_ramfsRob Landley
Even though ramfs hasn't got a backing device, commit e0bf68ddec4f ("mm: bdi init hooks") added one anyway, and put the initialization in init_rootfs() since that's the first user, leaving it out of init_ramfs() to avoid duplication. But initmpfs uses init_tmpfs() instead, so move the init into the filesystem's init function, add a "once" guard to prevent duplicate initialization, and call the filesystem init from rootfs init. This goes part of the way to allowing ramfs to be built as a module.
