Some reads are not converted yet because it isn't obvious ahead of time what the format of the block is going to be. Need to determine how to tell if the first block in the tree is a node or leaf format block. That will be done in later patches. 2012-11-15xfs: make buffer read verication an IO completion functionDave Chinner
Add a verifier function callback capability to the buffer read interfaces. This will be used by the callers to supply a function that verifies the contents of the buffer when it is read from disk. This patch does not provide callback functions, but simply modifies the interfaces to allow them to be called. The reason for adding this to the read interfaces is that it is very difficult to tell fom the outside is a buffer was just read from disk or whether we just pulled it out of cache. Supplying a callbck allows the buffer cache to use it's internal knowledge of the buffer to execute it only when the buffer is read from disk. It is intended that the verifier functions will mark the buffer with an EFSCORRUPTED error when verification fails. This allows the reading context to distinguish a verification error from an IO error, and potentially take further actions on the buffer (e.g. attempt repair) based on the error reported. 2012-05-14xfs: kill XBF_DONTBLOCKDave Chinner
Just about all callers of xfs_buf_read() and xfs_buf_get() use XBF_DONTBLOCK. This is used to make memory allocation use GFP_NOFS rather than GFP_KERNEL to avoid recursion through memory reclaim back into the filesystem. All the blocking get calls in growfs occur inside a transaction, even though they are no part of the transaction, so all allocation will be GFP_NOFS due to the task flag PF_TRANS being set. The blocking read calls occur during log recovery, so they will probably be unaffected by converting to GFP_NOFS allocations. Hence make XBF_DONTBLOCK behaviour always occur for buffers and kill the flag. 2012-05-14xfs: kill xfs_read_buf()Dave Chinner
xfs_read_buf() is effectively the same as xfs_trans_read_buf() when called outside a transaction context. The error handling is slightly different in that xfs_read_buf stales the errored buffer it gets back, but there is probably good reason for xfs_trans_read_buf() for doing this. Hence update xfs_trans_read_buf() to the same error handling as xfs_read_buf(), and convert all the callers of xfs_read_buf() to use the former function. We can then remove xfs_read_buf(). 2012-01-13xfs: remove xfs_itruncate_dataChristoph Hellwig
This wrapper isn't overly useful, not to say rather confusing. Around the call to xfs_itruncate_extents it does: - add tracing - add a few asserts in debug builds - conditionally update the inode size in two places - log the inode Both the tracing and the inode logging can be moved to xfs_itruncate_extents as they are useful for the attribute fork as well - in fact the attr code already does an equivalent xfs_trans_log_inode call just after calling xfs_itruncate_extents. The conditional size updates are a mess, and there was no reason to do them in two places anyway, as the first one was conditional on the inode having extents - but without extents we xfs_itruncate_extents would be a no-op and the placement wouldn't matter anyway. Instead move the size assignments and the asserts that make sense to the callers that want it. As a side effect of this clean up xfs_setattr_size by introducing variables for the old and new inode size, and moving the size updates into a common place. 2011-10-11xfs: simplify xfs_trans_ijoin* againChristoph Hellwig
There is no reason to keep a reference to the inode even if we unlock it during transaction commit because we never drop a reference between the ijoin and commit. Also use this fact to merge xfs_trans_ijoin_ref back into xfs_trans_ijoin - the third argument decides if an unlock is needed now. I'm actually starting to wonder if allowing inodes to be unlocked at transaction commit really is worth the effort. The only real benefit is that they can be unlocked earlier when commiting a synchronous transactions, but that could be solved by doing the log force manually after the unlock, too. 2011-10-11xfs: rename xfs_bmapi to xfs_bmapi_writeDave Chinner
Now that all the read-only users of xfs_bmapi have been converted to use xfs_bmapi_read(), we can remove all the read-only handling cases from xfs_bmapi(). Once this is done, rename xfs_bmapi to xfs_bmapi_write to reflect the fact it is for allocation only. This enables us to kill the XFS_BMAPI_WRITE flag as well. Also clean up xfs_bmapi_write to the style used in the newly added xfs_bmapi_read/delay functions. 2011-10-11xfs: introduce xfs_bmapi_read()Dave Chinner
xfs_bmapi() currently handles both extent map reading and allocation. As a result, the code is littered with "if (wr)" branches to conditionally do allocation operations if required. This makes the code much harder to follow and causes significant indent issues with the code. Given that read mapping is much simpler than allocation, we can split out read mapping from xfs_bmapi() and reuse the logic that we have already factored out do do all the hard work of handling the extent map manipulations. The results in a much simpler function for the common extent read operations, and will allow the allocation code to be simplified in another commit. Once xfs_bmapi_read() is implemented, convert all the callers of xfs_bmapi() that are only reading extents to use the new function. 2011-10-11xfs: avoid synchronous transactions when deleting attr blocksChristoph Hellwig
Currently xfs_attr_inactive causes a synchronous transactions if we are removing a file that has any extents allocated to the attribute fork, and thus makes XFS extremely slow at removing files with out of line extended attributes. The code looks a like a relict from the days before the busy extent list, but with the busy extent list we avoid reusing data and attr extents that have been freed but not commited yet, so this code is just as superflous as the synchronous transactions for data blocks. 2011-07-08xfs: split xfs_itruncate_finishChristoph Hellwig
Split the guts of xfs_itruncate_finish that loop over the existing extents and calls xfs_bunmapi on them into a new helper, xfs_itruncate_externs. Make xfs_attr_inactive call it directly instead of xfs_itruncate_finish, which allows to simplify the latter a lot, by only letting it deal with the data fork. As a result xfs_itruncate_finish is renamed to xfs_itruncate_data to make its use case more obvious. Also remove the sync parameter from xfs_itruncate_data, which has been unessecary since the introduction of the busy extent list in 2002, and completely dead code since 2003 when the XFS_BMAPI_ASYNC parameter was made a no-op. I can't actually see why the xfs_attr_inactive needs to set the transaction sync, but let's keep this patch simple and without changes in behaviour. Also avoid passing a useless argument to xfs_isize_check, and make it private to xfs_inode.c. 2011-06-23xfs: prevent bogus assert when trying to remove non-existent attributeDave Chinner
If the attribute fork on an inode is in btree format and has multiple levels (i.e node format rather than leaf format), then a lookup failure will trigger an assert failure in xfs_da_path_shift if the flag XFS_DA_OP_OKNOENT is not set. This flag is used to indicate to the directory btree code that not finding an entry is not a fatal error. In the case of doing a lookup for a directory name removal, this is valid as a user cannot insert an arbitrary name to remove from the directory btree. However, in the case of the attribute tree, a user has direct control over the attribute name and can ask for any random name to be removed without any validation. In this case, fsstress is asking for a non-existent user.selinux attribute to be removed, and that is causing xfs_da_path_shift() to fall off the bottom of the tree where it asserts that a lookup failure is allowed. Because the flag is not set, we die a horrible death on a debug enable kernel. Prevent this assert from firing on attribute removes by adding the op_flag XFS_DA_OP_OKNOENT to atribute removal operations. Discovered when testing on a SELinux enabled system by fsstress in test 070 by trying to remove a non-existent user.selinux attribute. 2010-10-18xfs: don't use vfs writeback for pure metadata modificationsDave Chinner
Under heavy multi-way parallel create workloads, the VFS struggles to write back all the inodes that have been changed in age order. The bdi flusher thread becomes CPU bound, spending 85% of it's time in the VFS code, mostly traversing the superblock dirty inode list to separate dirty inodes old enough to flush. We already keep an index of all metadata changes in age order - in the AIL - and continued log pressure will do age ordered writeback without any extra overhead at all. If there is no pressure on the log, the xfssyncd will periodically write back metadata in ascending disk address offset order so will be very efficient. Hence we can stop marking VFS inodes dirty during transaction commit or when changing timestamps during transactions. This will keep the inodes in the superblock dirty list to those containing data or unlogged metadata changes. However, the timstamp changes are slightly more complex than this - there are a couple of places that do unlogged updates of the timestamps, and the VFS need to be informed of these. Hence add a new function xfs_trans_ichgtime() for transactional changes, and leave xfs_ichgtime() for the non-transactional changes. For the case where we want to hold a reference on the inode a xfs_trans_ijoin_ref wrapper is added which does the IHOLD and marks the inode for needing an xfs_iput. 2009-12-14xfs: event tracing supportChristoph Hellwig
Convert the old xfs tracing support that could only be used with the out of tree kdb and xfsidbg patches to use the generic event tracer. To use it make sure CONFIG_EVENT_TRACING is enabled and then enable all xfs trace channels by: echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/enable or alternatively enable single events by just doing the same in one event subdirectory, e.g. echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/xfs_ihold/enable or set more complex filters, etc. In Documentation/trace/events.txt all this is desctribed in more detail. To reads the events do a cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace Compared to the last posting this patch converts the tracing mostly to the one tracepoint per callsite model that other users of the new tracing facility also employ. This allows a very fine-grained control of the tracing, a cleaner output of the traces and also enables the perf tool to use each tracepoint as a virtual performance counter, allowing us to e.g. count how often certain workloads git various spots in XFS. Take a look at http://lwn.net/Articles/346470/ for some examples. Also the btree tracing isn't included at all yet, as it will require additional core tracing features not in mainline yet, I plan to deliver it later. Currently the low-level buffer cache interfaces are highly confusing as we have a _flags variant of each that does actually respect the flags, and one without _flags which has a flags argument that gets ignored and overriden with a default set. Given that very few places use the default arguments get rid of the duplication and convert all callers to pass the flags explicitly. Also remove the now confusing _flags postfix. 2009-08-12xfs: switch to NOFS allocation under i_lock in xfs_attr_rmtval_getChristoph Hellwig
xfs_attr_rmtval_get is always called with i_lock held, but i_lock is taken in reclaim context so all allocations under it must avoid recursions into the filesystem. 2009-06-10xfs: use generic Posix ACL codeChristoph Hellwig
This patch rips out the XFS ACL handling code and uses the generic fs/posix_acl.c code instead. The ondisk format is of course left unchanged. This also introduces the same ACL caching all other Linux filesystems do by adding pointers to the acl and default acl in struct xfs_inode. 2009-06-08xfs: kill xfs_qmopsChristoph Hellwig
Kill the quota ops function vector and replace it with direct calls or stubs in the CONFIG_XFS_QUOTA=n case. Make sure we check XFS_IS_QUOTA_RUNNING in the right spots. We can remove the number of those checks because the XFS_TRANS_DQ_DIRTY flag can't be set otherwise. This brings us back closer to the way this code worked in IRIX and earlier Linux versions, but we keep a lot of the more useful factoring of common code. Eventually we should also kill xfs_qm_bhv.c, but that's left for a later patch. Reduces the size of the source code by about 250 lines and the size of XFS module by about 1.5 kilobytes with quotas enabled: text data bss dec hex filename 615957 2960 3848 622765 980ad fs/xfs/xfs.o 617231 3152 3848 624231 98667 fs/xfs/xfs.o.old Fallout: - xfs_qm_dqattach is split into xfs_qm_dqattach_locked which expects the inode locked and xfs_qm_dqattach which does the locking around it, thus removing XFS_QMOPT_ILOCKED. 2008-08-13[XFS] Move xfs_attr_rolltrans to xfs_trans_rollNiv Sardi
Move it from the attr code to the transaction code and make the attr code call the new function. We rolltrans is really usefull whenever we want to use rolling transaction, should be generic, it isn't dependent on any part of the attr code anyway. We use this excuse to change all the: if ((error = xfs_attr_rolltrans())) calls into: error = xfs_trans_roll(); if (error) SGI-PV: 981498 SGI-Modid: xfs-linux-melb:xfs-kern:31729a Signed-off-by: Niv Sardi <xaiki@sgi.com> Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Lachlan McIlroy <lachlan@sgi.com>
